Measurement Disclaimer

SoundMeterOnline provides approximate sound level readings based on your device's microphone input. These readings are not calibrated, not traceable to any national measurement standard, and not suitable for any purpose requiring certified accuracy.

Not a Medical Device

This tool does not assess hearing capability or diagnose hearing conditions. If you suspect hearing damage, consult an audiologist. Do not rely on dB readings from this tool to determine whether your hearing has been affected by noise exposure.

Not a Compliance Tool

Measurements from this website do not constitute evidence for regulatory compliance with OSHA, EPA, WHO, or any local noise ordinance. Workplace noise assessments must be conducted with instruments meeting IEC 61672 Class 1 or Class 2 specifications, operated by qualified personnel, with current calibration certificates.

Factors Affecting Accuracy

Many factors reduce the accuracy of browser-based sound measurement:

  • Microphone frequency response limitations (especially below 100 Hz and above 8 kHz)
  • Browser audio processing that may not fully disable despite API constraints
  • Lack of calibration against a known reference level
  • Environmental interference (wind, vibration, reflections)
  • Microphone placement and orientation
  • Digital clipping at very high sound pressure levels

Appropriate Uses

This tool is appropriate for:

  • General noise awareness and education
  • Relative comparison between environments
  • Classroom noise monitoring for behavioral management
  • Evaluating whether a space is approximately suitable for recording or calls
  • Understanding frequency content of ambient sound
  • Tracking noise level trends over time

Health Information

Noise exposure guidelines referenced on this website (OSHA limits, WHO recommendations) are provided for informational purposes. They should not replace professional occupational health assessment. If you work in a noisy environment and have concerns about hearing safety, request a formal noise survey from your employer's safety officer.

No Warranty

This tool is provided without warranty of any kind. We make no claims about the accuracy, reliability, or fitness for any particular purpose of the measurements displayed. Use at your own discretion.
